module 1



Module 1 - Literary response essay


To the student; When you write a literary response essay, you have to read and analyze a story then make comments that show you have a valid understanding of the text. You also explain why the story is significant mentioning your own interest and the writer’s intention.  The essay should be your original work. 


A.  Answer questions in writing to explore the story.  Use full sentences.

1.  Write a short summary of the story.  (Blue)  Include Who? What? Why? When?  How? Outcome?

2. How did her position in society change?  (green)


3.  What social fact did you learn from reading the story?  (yellow)

4. What most surprised you about the story?  (red)

5.  What did Ainu women have to do when coming of age?   (white)

6. Was the process an ordeal?  (red/black)

7.  Was tattooing necessary?   Why?   

8.  What problems did the characters have?  (black)

9.  What did the writer want us to experience?    (yellow)

10.  How do you think Harukor felt about getting her tattoo? (red)

B,  WRITING PLAN - use the following questions to guide your writing.

Is the story significant? Or, in what ways is the story significant?
この物語(ものがたり)重要(じゅうよう)か? または何の方法(ほうほう)が物語を重要(じゅうよう)にしたか? 

What about the story astonished you?
この物語 の何があなたを驚かせましたか?

What assumptions did you have before reading this story?
この物語 を読む前にどのような推定を持ったか?

How was your mind changed from reading this story?
この物語(ものがたり)を読んであなたの考えがどう変わりましたか?

And an additional summary conclusion:

Mention the main point of the story from the writer’s point of view. 
筆者の視点からわかる物語の最も大事な事を述べよ。
