module 1 - 2

Writing about a picture

Choose one of the ainu drawings and write about it using the plan below.

Write about all of the following:

What is the subject? What is the action? What is the setting?
What astonishes you about it?
Make an inference (guess) about the picture.
Ask a question about the picture and answer the question.
Finally, write about the picture from the point of view of at least three different people.

Example

Landscape at sunset with ship

The title of this painting is “landscape at sunset with ship(1893)painted in Hokkaido by Henry Savage Landor

I guess that he sketched this landscape of Hokkaido while on his approach in the boat. If my guess is correct, I have to ask why did he draw the picture before he arrived in Hokkaido? Perhaps this was his point of view: Hokkaido, the land of the Ainu, was an unknown place to him. So, he painted the feelings of fear and curiosity. Looking at the paintings, the river is black, the sky is not blue, and the color of red, yellow and white are also mixed. My point of view is that he paid close attention to the same point. First, the boat seems to be old and small.  The sky is messed up. My impression from studying this painting is that he was worried about going to Hokkaido and meeting the Ainu.
