Are you shy? Do you find conversations with new people difficult? if you do, then these tips can help you connect. If you're outgoing and love to talk, they can help you improve your conversation skills.

Match the tips with each paragraph.

Have some topics ready to start a conversation. Say something about the weather or the place you're in. Talk about the weekend - we all have something to say about weekends!

Make the conversation interesting. Know about events in the news. Read restaurant and movie reviews. Find out about the current music scene or what's new in fashion or sports.

Be a good listener. Make eye contact and say, "Yes," "Hmm," "Uh-huh," "Right," and "I know." And say, "Really? That's interesting." It encourages people to talk.

Don't be boring. Don't just say, "Yes" or "No" when you answer a question. Give some interesting details, too.

Don't talk all the time. Ask, "How about you?" and show you are interested in the other person, too. People love to talk about themselves!

Ask information questions. Ask questions like, "What do you do in your free time?" or "What kind of food do you like?" Use follow-up questions to keep the conversation going. But don't ask too many questions - it's not an interview!

Be positive. Negative comments can sound rude. And if you don't want to answer a personal question, simply say, "Oh, I'm not sure I can answer that," or "I'd rather not say."

Smile! Everyone loves a smile. Just be relaxed, smile, and be yourself.

A.  When you write a book report it has to be in the form of a paragraph.  It has to follow a topic sentence, which is the main idea. The topic sentence says what the report is about.

Example topic sentence:   Dadi-Ma's life in the shanty with her grandson is intolerable, so she decides to get away for the health and well-being of her grandson, Chotoo.  Note, the topic sentence should be the first or second sentence in the report.

These are not topic sentences:

"This is a story about Dadi-Ma and her Grandson.  <--  This is true but it does not give any detail about the main action of the story.

Dadi-Ma and her grandson are poor.  <--  This is true but it does not give any detail about the main action of the story.

The topic sentence should tell the audience what the report is about.  The story is about getting away in hope of starting a better life so the topic sentence above is suitable.

B. Today, I have written half of the report (below) .  Notice it is a paragraph.  You will complete the report.  The idea is that you focus on the plan given (below).

C. Using a plan - read the questions below (but don't answer them). They are just questions to guide you in writing a short report.  The paragraph below the questions is incomplete.  But notice;  the paragraph does answer a few of the questions.  Point:  think of the questions as a writing plan.

An Effort to Escape Poverty 

Dadi-Ma's life in the shanty with her grandson is impossible so she decides to get away for the well being of her grandson, Chotoo. The situation in the shanty is not good.  It is noisy, dirty, and residents in the overcrowded shelter often fight when they get too drunk.  The owner, Mr Naidoo, only thinks about profit.  He’s not interested in helping people who can’t pay rent. She can’t pay the rent so she plans an escape in secret.
