Cardboard Mansions

Writing a book report

A.  When you write a book report it has to be in the form of a paragraph.  It has to follow a topic sentence, which is the main idea. The topic sentence says what the report is about.

Example topic sentence:   Dadi-Ma's life in the shanty with her grandson is intolerable, so she decides to get away for the health and well-being of her grandson, Chotoo.  Note, the topic sentence should be the first or second sentence in the report.

These are not topic sentences:

"This is a story about Dadi-Ma and her Grandson.  <--  This is true but it does not give any detail about the main action of the story.

Dadi-Ma and her grandson are poor.  <--  This is true but it does not give any detail about the main action of the story.

The topic sentence should tell the audience what the report is about.  The story is about getting away in hope of starting a better life so the topic sentence above is suitable.

B. Today, I have written half of the report (below) .  Notice it is a paragraph.  You will complete the report.  The idea is that you focus on the plan given (below).

C. Using a plan - read the questions below (but don't answer them). They are just questions to guide you in writing a short report.  The paragraph below the questions is incomplete.  But notice;  the paragraph does answer a few of the questions.  Point:  think of the questions as a writing plan.

Use the questions below to focus on a plan for writing and complete the report.  Write in paragraph form (as shown).

The plan
1. Why does Dadi-Ma have to get away from the shanty?
2. What difficulties did she face in the shanty?
3. Where does she decide to go?
4. Who does she want to meet again?  Why?
6. What happened to Chotoo’s father and mother?
7. What happens when she arrives in Stanger?
8. How do Dadi-Ma and Chotoo feel about their situation?
9.  What circumstances brought about this tragedy?
10.  What hope is there? What will likely happen to them?

Report
An Effort to Escape Poverty

Dadi-Ma's life in the shanty with her grandson is impossible so she decides to get away for the well being of her grandson, Chotoo. The situation in the shanty is not good.  It is noisy, dirty, and residents in the overcrowded shelter often fight when they get too drunk.  The owner, Mr Naidoo, only thinks about profit.  He’s not interested in helping people who can’t pay rent. She can’t pay the rent so she plans an escape in secret.

(This report is unfinished.  You have to finish this report for homework.)
