searching

interior
Searching for the Ainu in the interior

"The interior is a kind of a jungle,” they said, "the home of yellow and black bears. And the rivers are swollen from the heavy rains. The Ainu up the river are unfriendly and bad, and they will kill you. Then in the high grass the horse-flies and mosquitoes will eat you alive."
" If you go alone," said the wise man of the party, "you will not come back alive."

These reports were not encouraging, but dead or alive, if there were any Ainu up the stream I would see them. There was no path or trail so I could not bring my baggage. I decided to only carry my paint-box, wooden sketching panels, my diary, and my revolver. I left all my other things at Otsu to wait for my return.

"Should you not come back again, can I keep all your belongings as my property?" kindly asked the landlord of the tea-house when I said good-bye.  All the villagers gathered early in the morning to see me start.

Trouble at Horobetsu

1-Horobetsu

Conflict With The Christian Ainu of Horobetsu

Landor departed Hakodate and after crossing volcano bay, lands near Horobetsu. He wants  to paint the Ainu on the beach and they attack him.

The Ainu were sitting on the beach cleaning a large cow fish.  With their long hair in the wind and their naked bodies, they made a pretty picture.  I wanted to sketch them.  As I approached they paid no attention to me.  So, I sat down on the sand, opened my paint-box, and made my first picture.  A young man came over to see what I was doing. " What is it?" he asked me in Japanese.  I answered that I was painting the group. This news shocked him. He immediately told the others about the painting. They also were shocked and became angry and disgusted. They took their fish knives and rushed at my back. The shouting was very loud, and louder still when they saw me continue my painting.  My paints and brushes were taken from me and broken.  I was held down and a big knife was held over my head so I could not escape. The Ainu beat me.
